Ancient yet modern, fabulously rich yet achingly poor, Bombay is the microcosm of India. Representing this billion-plus people country, it is diverse, versatile, glamorous, tragic, and full of life.
The city of Bombay originally consisted of seven islands. This group of islands, which have since been joined together by a series of reclamations, formed part of the kingdom of Ashoka, the famous Emperor of India. This erstwhile insignificant port city has now developed to become one of the foremost metropolis of the world. As the capital city of the state of Maharashtra, it is politically one of the most important cities in western India. The commercial capital of India, the city is home to some of India's largest corporate houses.
Now called Mumbai, the city also has a multi-million dollar film-making industry - popularly referred to as Bollywood. Mumbai has monuments of historical importance. The Gateway Of India is one such magnificent monument and prime tourist attraction in the city. Mumbai is a fine melting pot where one finds people from different parts of India living in harmony in spite of the difference in language, dress codes, and food habits.
